Prevent work in Albania

More than a quarter of modern slavery victims in the UK are from Albania.

Since September 1st, 2023, Medaille Trust has been dedicated to preventing human trafficking and exploitation in Albania.

Through a comprehensive and innovative approach, we’re addressing these challenges by focusing on economic empowerment, legal reforms, and cross-border cooperation. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Empowering Albanian Youth: Economic-Led Development (ELD) Programme

At Medaille Trust, we recognize that economic empowerment is a vital tool in reducing vulnerabilities that lead to human trafficking. Our ELD programme focuses on equipping Albanian youth with the skills and opportunities to build sustainable futures, directly addressing the root causes of exploitation.

1. Skill Development

We deliver targeted educational initiatives that align with the global labour market's needs, enhancing employability and entrepreneurship. By investing in youth education, we’re not just creating opportunities—we’re building a generation resilient to exploitation.

2. Business Incubation

Through business incubators, we nurture local startups, offering mentorship and access to financial resources. This approach fosters innovation, strengthens the local economy, and empowers young entrepreneurs to thrive in their communities.

3. Tourism Promotion

Albania’s rich cultural heritage offers immense potential for economic growth. By enhancing tourism infrastructure and marketing Albania as a prime destination, we’re creating jobs, boosting local economies, and building a foundation for long-term stability.

For UK-based donors passionate about transforming lives and addressing global challenges, this programme represents a powerful opportunity to make a lasting impact. Together, we can empower Albanian youth, strengthen communities, and reduce the vulnerabilities that lead to trafficking.

Our ELD programme focuses on equipping Albanian youth with the skills and opportunities to build sustainable futures, directly addressing the root causes of exploitation.

Strengthening Local Response in Albania

As an integral part of the URAT network, our focus is on enhancing the local response to human trafficking and modern-day slavery through collaborative and impactful initiatives.

By joining forces with like-minded organizations and leveraging URAT's coordinated framework, we aim to:

  • Foster Collaboration: Actively engage with URAT network members to create synergies that amplify anti-trafficking efforts at the national level. This includes shared resources, coordinated advocacy campaigns, and joint action plans that address the root causes of trafficking.
  • Support Local Initiatives: Provide tailored support to grassroots organizations and community-led initiatives in Albania, strengthening their capacity to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute perpetrators.
  • Develop Joint Activities: Design and implement multi-stakeholder activities, such as public awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and community outreach programs, to combat human trafficking effectively.
  • Enhance Victim-Centered Approaches: Collaborate with shelters and rehabilitation centres to ensure comprehensive reintegration services, fostering long-term recovery and empowerment for survivors.

Through these concerted efforts, we aim to contribute to a more robust, unified response to human trafficking and modern slavery in Albania, building resilience within vulnerable communities and supporting systemic change at all levels.

Cross-Border Cooperation: Tackling Human Trafficking Together

Human trafficking transcends borders, demanding an international response. Medaille Trust is forging stronger ties between Albania and the UK, creating impactful solutions through:

Diaspora Engagement

We’re harnessing the power of the Albanian diaspora in the UK to drive change. By connecting with Albanian academics and engaging diaspora members as angel investors, we are channelling resources into innovative anti-trafficking projects that make a real difference.

Research and Insight

Partnering with Albanian universities and local stakeholders, we delve deep into trafficking patterns and the challenges faced by returnees. This evidence-based approach strengthens our strategies, ensuring they are effective, targeted, and responsive to on-the-ground realities.

Shared Learning

Through conferences and joint training sessions, we bring together UK and Albanian law enforcement, NGOs, and community leaders. These collaborations foster mutual learning, building a united front against trafficking while sharing best practices and innovative solutions.

Criminal Justice Conference

Our flagship event creates a platform for UK and Albanian stakeholders to engage, share expertise, and strengthen cross-border partnerships to combat human trafficking effectively.

Together, we’re building bridges across borders to end exploitation, protect victims, and ensure justice is served.
