Volunteer

Volunteer with us!

Make a change and support survivors of modern slavery and trafficking.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who want to gain experience in this sector, those who have lived experience, those wanting to give their time, skills and experience to support others, or those who have careers, who have come into contact with survivors and want to offer their skills.

To find out more about the different opportunities we have please see our opportunities below.

How to Volunteer

All of our volunteering opportunities available UK wide are handled centrally. If you see an opportunity you are interested in, fill in this application form and return it to volunteering@medaille-trust.org.uk

What Happens Next?

Our volunteering coordinator will contact you to confirm receipt of application and explain the process.

If at this stage your application is successful, the next stages are:

  • A phone call
  • An informal volunteering discussion either face to face or via Microsoft Teams
  • A DBS check (which we will pay for)
  • Request references

If all of this is satisfactory, the next steps are:

  • An initial online training session
  • Set a start date
  • An induction
  • Further mandatory training (where necessary for the role)

We are committed to the wellbeing and development of all of our volunteers, there will be ongoing supervision and support sessions with a named person. As well as the chance to participate in continuous professional and personal development, in the form of additional training and workshops.

What we offer:

  • Meaningful and impactful opportunities for volunteers to gain experience in a sector, that makes a profound difference to the lives of survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery.
  • Expenses reimbursed in line with Medaille’s Expenses Policy.
  • A DBS check completed and paid for by Medaille.
  • A reference, if you volunteer with Medaille for a minimum of six months after training.
  • A clear introduction and induction to Medaille Trust.
  • A commitment to ongoing support, training and development, including our virtual e-learning platform where you can undertake as much continuous development as you like.
  • A strong organisational focus on wellbeing, including regular check in sessions

Volunteering FAQs

  • Is there an age limit for volunteering?

All of our volunteering opportunities are for those aged 18+.

  • How long does it take to start volunteering?

This is difficult to put a definitive answer on, as due to DBS checks and reference checks it does require a period of waiting, as well as availability to be able to attend our training. However, we would expect no longer than three months from application being acknowledged to being able to start volunteering with us. This could be shorter dependent on the role.

  • Do I need a DBS check?

All of our roles are subject to DBS checks, dependent on the role, it will mean that the levels of DBS checks may vary. For example, if you will be volunteering with service users you will be expected to have an enhanced DBS check. However, for translating or other roles which don’t come into contact with service users, a different level of DBS check may be required. The cost of the check will be covered by Medaille Trust.

  • What happens if I have a criminal record, will this stop me being able to volunteer with you?

It may not automatically stop you from being able to volunteer with us, it will be looked at on a case-by-case basis and will depend on the role being applied for and the nature of the conviction.

  • I have lived experience of modern slavery and trafficking, can I volunteer with you?

We are keen to have volunteers who have lived experience, volunteer with Medaille, please do get in touch.

  • Would having a disability or additional needs stop me from being able to volunteer with you?

We welcome people with disabilities and/or additional needs and will endeavour to support any person. We would consider reasonable adjustments which may be made in order to support any volunteers in their volunteering experience with us. If for any reason, we aren’t able to put the reasonable adjustments in place, then other offers of volunteering may be offered. Or where appropriate, support to access other volunteering opportunities that may include those outside of the organisation will be offered.

  • How many hours do I need to volunteer for?

We appreciate any amount of time that volunteers are able to give. The amount of time needed is different determined by the opportunity. This will be discussed and agreed with you during the application process. For most of the volunteer roles, we would like a regular commitment and so would appreciate if you inform us as soon as possible if your circumstances change.

  • Will I receive expenses?

Expenses which have been authorised – such as reasonable travel expenses with proof of purchase will be reimbursed in line with our expenses policy.

  • What training and development opportunities do you provide?

All volunteers are required to undertake induction training prior to starting the role and any relevant additional training that you require in order to undertake your role with confidence. Training will vary between services and volunteering opportunity.

At Medaille Trust we are committed to development of staff and volunteers, volunteers will be offered training opportunities as they arise and the chance to participate in working and knowledge sharing groups, should they wish to.
